Degrees of Precision: The Central Role of Calibration in Temperature Sensing

Calibration is the process of comparing measurement devices to a known standard to verify their accuracy. Without calibration, even the most sophisticated temperature sensors might produce skewed results.

Calibration systemTemperature measurements play a pivotal role in many industrial processes. But how can one ensure they’re accurate?

Importance Of Calibrating Temperature Sensors

Calibration is the process of comparing measurement devices to a known standard to verify their accuracy. Without calibration, even the most sophisticated temperature sensors might produce skewed results. Specifically, in the world of industrial temperature sensors, where even slight deviations can lead to faulty outputs, calibration ensures that equipment functions to its highest standard. Calibration temperature plays a significant role in determining the performance and effectiveness of these devices.

Temp-Pro’s Thermocouples and RTD’s

Calibration services are necessary to support the proper operation of temperature measurement tools and devices. During calibration, Temp-Pro focuses on the accuracy of measurement and temperature ranges for devices such as thermocouples (TCs), thermistors, RTDs, and a variety of resistance thermometers (PRTs/SPRTs). Our thermocouples are precision temperature sensing units that have been manufactured to meet EMF vs. Temperature characteristics specified by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technologies).

Thermocouples and RTDs, under standard operational conditions, demonstrate consistent performance metrics. However, observed variations in response time or deviations in signal output may necessitate periodic maintenance or calibration to ensure optimal accuracy and functionality.

Reference Standards in Calibration

The process of calibration relies heavily on reference standards. These standards, known for their stable temperature readings, offer a benchmark against which other measurement equipment can be compared. Ensuring that these reference standards are of the highest quality is paramount for the calibration process to be effective. All calibrations are conducted under the guidance of our quality system, certified to ISO 9001:2015 and are performed by comparison techniques as defined in ASTM E220.

Over time, environmental factors, wear and tear, or changes in temperature and humidity can impact a sensor’s accuracy. Regular calibration ensures that these deviations are identified and corrected promptly, ensuring accurate readings.

An ISO accredited calibration laboratory will have the equipment and expertise necessary to calibrate a wide temperature range of measurement devices. Temp-Pro has a calibration laboratory for verification and calibration of Temperature vs. EMF of the thermocouples supplied to customers and provides calibration data when requested by the customer. When calibrating an RTD, you need to determine the Resistance vs. Temperature characteristic and the unit must be calibrated at a fixed temperature. A Multimeter is used for resistance measurement and a megohmmeter for Insulation Resistance Measurement. All standards and calibration is traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Calibration Benefits

Beyond the obvious advantage of accurate measurements, calibration offers a multitude of other benefits. It boosts confidence in measurement results, reduces the risk of faulty outputs or equipment malfunctions, and can significantly extend the lifespan of the measuring instrument. Furthermore, having calibrated equipment can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure that industrial processes remain compliant with international standards.

If you’re in the industrial sector, especially if your operations hinge on precise temperature readings, it’s imperative to invest in regular calibration. Ensure your measurement devices are calibrated by professionals like Temp-Pro, to maintain accurate, reliable, and efficient operations.
